This journey covered 5 days,  1,112 km /  695 miles.

Our route was Carrick Castle, Argyll to Beauly via Fort William; Ullapool and recommencing where we left off in June 2016 at Inchmadamph and then right round the north west coast via Assynt to Durness and then across the top of Scotland via Tongue, Bettyhill and Thurso to John o’Groats, down the east coast via Wick, Helmsdale, Brora visiting Dunrobin Castle, as part of the NC 500 Route and returning via Beauly and Fort William to Carrick Castle.

Saturday 6th May 2017

We drove from Carrick Castle to an overnight stay off road near Beauly.

Sunday 7th May 2017

Continuing the NC 500 Route we started in June 2016, we drove from Beauly up to Inchmadamph north of Ullapool where we last left the route to go home on Journey No 30.

We walked around the old Ceannabeinne Township Trail that was abandoned in 1842, then visited the Durness museum, had lunch in Durness before going down to the large cave at Durness.

We drove down through Wick, Helmsdale to Brora where we visited Dunrobin Castle and afterwards visited the Brora Broch.

After spending our last night on this journey near Beauly on our way home, we stopped at Fort William to refuel before returning home to Carrick Castle.

Summary

Amazingly, we have been able to recover our lost photos when our smart phone camera failed and so over three months later have added some of the photos recovered – we had a great time and particularly loved the scenery in the north west of Scotland. We had great weather up the west coast but it was incredibly cold by the time we reached John o’Groats. We spent our penultimate night at Duncansby Head before travelling down the east coast stopping at Dunrobin Castle and the Broch at Brora befor driving home the next day.

Total mileage for the trip: 1,112 km / 695 miles.

Total mileage in our ownership: 19,072 km / 11,920 miles.

Total mileage to date: 129,558 km / 80,974 miles.

 

Harrie was MOT-ed and serviced in Jamestown on 4th August 2017 with current mileage 81,011 miles.

Harrie was sold on 12th August 2017 with a total mileage of  81,062  miles / 129,700 km after delivery to the new owners at the Rest & Be Thankful, Argyll.

Total mileage in our ownership from 7th November 2009 to 12th August 2017: 19,214 km / 12,009 miles.

After Liz having a hospital appointment at 12.20 at the Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria, we departed for Forres and parked up at Findhorn for a few nights, arriving at 18.30 hrs.

Saturday, 1st October 2016

The reason for this journey was to attend the Community Woodlands Association’s annual 2-day Conference on behalf of our Cormonachan Woodlands Association of which Liz is Chair and Douglas the Secretary.

The venue was Horizon Scotland in Forres. A very modern building.

The day was filled with many speakers and woodland site visits in the area and ended with a good dinner and ceilidh in Forres.

Sunday, 2nd October 2016

The Conference continued in Forres and ended with the AGM after which we drove to Findhorn to walk on the long sandy beach in great sunny weather.

Monday 3rd October 2016

We decided to take our time travelling home so started the day visiting the Findhorn Community Village that’s an alternative lifestyle with very different houses.

We then drove back to walk along the beach again, this time most of the sands were covered by the sea and then visited the Pictish Fort and harbour at Burgh.

Following this we drove back to Forres and visited the 6 metre high standing stone in Forres that’s protected in a glass case. Sueno’s Stone is a Picto-Scottish Class III standing stone on the north-easterly edge of Forres, Scotland. It is the largest surviving Pictish stone of its type in Scotland and stands over 6.5 metres high.

Our route was Carrick Castle, Argyll to Oban, ferry to Craignure, Isle of Mull then Duart Castle, Dervaig, Tobermory, Ardmore, Glengorm, Tobermory, Dervaig, Calgary, Ulva Ferry, Ardmeanagh, Glen More, Craignure, ferry to Oban and home to Carrick Castle.

Thursday 1st September 2016

Carrick Castle to Oban and ferry to Craignure – Departed home in Harrie to do shopping in Oban before taking the ferry to Craignure. Refuelled in Oban (47.04 l = £52.67 at 127,395 km). Arrived in Craignure to use a motorhome site for the first time since we purchased Harrie in 2009 at Sheiling Holidays, Craignure (£18 pn). Facilities were good with a pitch facing the sea.

Friday 2nd September 2016

The main reason for coming to Mull was to attend a “Woods of our Own” event run by the Community Woodlands Association and where Liz gave a talk to the meeting on our community woodlands – Cormonachan Woodlands and managed by the Cormonachan Woodlands Association of which Liz is the Chair and Douglas the Secretary – http://www.cormonachan-woodlands.co.uk and Facebook/cormonachan for further information. This was an all day meeting with a site visit in the afternoon to Tiroran Woodlands, SW Mull. After a very useful meeting we returned to stay in Harrie for a second night at the same site in Craignure.

Our first visit of the day was to Duart Castle an impressive 13th century fortress built on a high rock overlooking the sound of Mull and Firth of Lorne and home of the Clan MacLean. After spending a couple of hours looking round the castle we had coffee in their cafe before heading off to Dervaig. Nearly all the roads on the Isle of Mull are single track so in a motorhome you have to be very well aware of where passing places are. We found nowhere in Dervaig to stop so we drove on to Tobermory and had a walk around the town. Parking was easy in the marina area car park. We then drove to the Ardmore forest and had an 8 km walk staying in the second car park overnight, wild camping for free that we usually do.

In the morning we drove on to Glengorm Castle and had a walk there to the standing stones followed by coffee in their cafe. We then returned to Tobermory and drove through Dervaig again to Calgary where we visited the Art in Nature walk with 24 sculptures around the woodlands walk.

After that visit we had another walk to the old pier at Calgary beach. This is a lovely sandy beach and the walk is full of interesting geological rocks from millions of years ago. Leaving there after an icecream at the beach we drove on to a car park on the north side of Loch na Keal where there were eagle spotters watching sea eagles in the forest trees. We saw them fly but lots of those who stopped only saw them perched in the trees. We stayed there overnight.

Monday 5th September 2016

In the morning we drove round the loch to the Ardmeanagh peninsula. Spectacular views but very few places for motorhomes to stop and admire the panoramas. The car parks with the best views had bars at the entrances so motorhomes cannot stop – not good for tourism.

The narrow single track roads around this west area of Mull are not really suitable for motorhomes with not so many passing places and the driving is fairly stressful as a result. We visited Burg, a National Trust for Scotland area where if the weather was fine there is a good long walk of 10 miles round trip to the fossil tree but the weather by then was misty and very damp so no views. So we decided to head off home and catch an earlier ferry from Craignure than planned for the following day. The drive along Glen More was much better even though it was still single track as the road was fairly straight with plenty of passing places. We did not go to Bunessan, Fionphort or Iona by ferry as we had already been to that area many times whilst sailing in our yacht. On arrival at Craignure, there was a ferry just arriving and CalMac changed our booking with ease and we heading over to Oban in 50 minutes.

At Oban we did some more shopping and refuelled (25 l = £28.99 at 127,598 km). We then drove home to Carrick Castle.

Summary

We had mixed weather, dry for the walks which was a plus. Although we are used to driving on single track roads as we live down one 11 miles long, the roads on Mull are are fairly stressful for driving on in a motorhome and perhaps even in a car. The island needs to look at increasing the passing places and to having good parking places to admire the views that are worth going to see. We had a good meeting which was the original object of going to Mull however there are not many places to visit and of those that are there some don’t open at weekends!

Our first stop was at the WW II Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge with great views over the Nevis Range of Mountains with Ben Nevis towering above Fort William. (Refuelled in Fort William with 36.7 ltr diesel / £40.00 – 126,410 km).  We then drove up to Glen Shiel for the night after visiting the 1719 Battlefield area in Glen Shiel.

Monday 27th June 2016

We next went to Stromeferry where we caught the train back to Kyle of Lochalsh for a 30 minute stay before returning on the same train to Plockton. It was a fair walk from the station to Plockton village where we had lunch before returning a couple of hours later on the train back to Stromeferry. You may well ask, why take the train when you have a motorhome? Well, the train travels right alongside Loch Carron with some lovely views that you would only get from the train…  We were not impressed with Plockton.

We then drove on north stopping at Attadale for a photo stop and onwards through Kishorn, Strathcarron, Shieldaig and Torridon before stopping at Kinlochewe to visit the visitor centre there. Our overnight stop was on the shores of Loch Maree.

We left Loch Maree calling into Charlestown, the port of Gairloch on the way up to Inverewe Gardens run by the National Trust for Scotland which was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday. The below photographs hardly describe the gardens at Inverewe – you’ll just have to visit them yourselves to enjoy them too!

We then drove to Ullapool, did some shopping at Tesco and then drove further north to Knockan Crag by Elphin in Sutherland. (667 km / 417 miles in 5 1/2 days from Carrick Castle to Inchnadamph). We refuelled in Ullapool with 42 ltr diesel costing £49.00 (126764 km).

Knockan Crag was a very interesting place as the geology was very different with the older rocks over the newer rocks. The history of Scotland was shown from when it was at the south pole to its move up past the equator to American and finally joining with England.

We had about a seven mile round trip walk to these caves where an underground river ran through them.

With the weather deteriorating and heavy rain forecast for the afternoon we decided to head home from Inchnadamph via Ullapool, Contin, Muir of Ord, Beauly, Drumnadrochit, Fort William and home to Carrick Castle, Argyll (367 km / 229 miles in 1/2 a day).

We enjoyed the journey north visiting many places mainly in Wester Ross and enjoying the amazing views. We intend to continue our journey north next from Sutherland up to the north coast of Scotland maybe in the autumn. Total cost of fuel for the week was £125.

Our first visit of the day was to Auchindrain by Furnace, Argyll. This is a unique survival of the old communal farming villages. Two hundred years ago there were 4,000 townships like Auchindrain where families worked the land together. The last residents left in 1967. This township is set in 22 acres and contains all the community’s buildings – its houses, byres, barns and more.

Our next visit was to the National Trust’s Crarae Gardens by Furnace, Argyll. These gardens on the north shore of Loch Fyne are in a beautiful woodland glen with tumbling waterfalls. Trees and shrubs from all over the temperate world thrive there including an array of rhododendrons. We did the Red walk in pouring rain but it dried up enough to allow us to do the White walk as well.

We then drove through Lochgilphead to the Knapdale Forest where we visited the area where beavers have been introduced. The interpretation centre explains the beaver’s habitat and the walks where you can see their activity.

We discovered that there were other beaver sites in the area so went off to another one with a good walk to it where we found very fresh evidence of the beaver’s activity. Whilst walking there two friends appeared on their bicycles who lived close by so we were invited to go back to their house for coffees after we completed our walk…

We then met up with our friends, Bernie & Liz for coffee at Achnamara before heading to Tayvallich for lunch. We then drove down to the end of the single track road to Keilbeg where we visited the chapel with its collection of early gravestones and then walked around the area.

Following the setting of the sun, we drove to the Glen of Burning near Tayvallich for our second night’s stay in Harrie – a very quiet place off the road.

Thursday, 4th June 2015

Our first visit of the day was to the National Trust’s Arduaine Gardens, on the A816 20 miles south of Oban and 19 miles north of Lochgilphead. This beautiful garden is on the edge of the Atlantic and is best known for its rhododendron collection.

This was our last places of interest visit so we went to Oban and did our shopping before returning home to Carrick Castle.  We were mostly lucky with the weather with the exception of our wet first walk at Crarae Gardens we managed to do everywhere else in the relative dry… A nice journey in Harrie!

Our route was Carrick Castle to the Edinburgh area and back to Carrick Castle, Argyll.
This was a short break holiday to visit Hopetoun House and gardens, South Queensferry near Edinburgh on Thursday 28th August; the Scottish National Mining Museum at Newtongrange just south of Edinburgh, Crichton Castle close by and Ratho Climbing Centre in the evening where Liz was being assessed for her kayak paddling skills on Friday 29th August and then visiting Edinburgh from the Park & Ride at Ingliston by tram and then walking first to St Mary’s Cathedral to look at the Scottish Dyspora Tapestries, then on to The Georgian House in Charlotte’s Square, followed by another walk to the Scottish National Gallery, Gladstone’s Land in Lawnmarket, then to St Giles Cathedral and afterwards watching in the street a magician and an escape artist in the Royal Mile before driving home on 30th August.

En route to Edinburgh, we passed the Kelpies in Halix Park, by Falkirk. These are two massive sculptures close to the M9 in a new 350 hectare park and visitor attraction. The Kelpies are alongside a new canal link. The two Kelpies are the world’s largest equine sculptures at 30 metres tall and were opened in the summer of 2014. Our first visit of this short break was to Hopetoun House and gardens which was built by the family of the current owner, the Earl of Hopetoun 300 years ago. The house was the work of two Scottish architects – Sir William Bruce and William Adam. Hopetoun House is Scotland’s finest stately home.

Following an excellent guided tour of the house to see the rooms with their wonderful furniture and paintings and a walk around the sea walk nature trail we left after about four hours to have dinner in South Queensferry before going to the cinema to see Guardians of the Galaxy in Dunfermline, Fife.

We parked up for the night under the Forth Rail Bridge in North Queensferry. The previous time we came we were able to park in the car park but this time the car park had been closed for the night at 18.30 so we found just one spot to park on our own. When the trains are running it is very noisey there but quiet through the dead of night!

Friday 29th August 2014

We departed North Queensferry early and headed for the National Mining Museum Scotland in Newtongrange, Midlothian. This is an excellent 5* attraction with two floors of exhibitions and a really interesting 1 1/2 hours guided tour of the Lady Victoria Colliery. This is the finest surviving Victorian colliery in Europe. We spent about 4 hours looking at everything and learnt such a lot from the guide who was a former miner when the colliery was open.

As you can see from these few photos this is a very large colliery with plenty to see!

Later the same day we visited Crichton Castle in Crichton only about 20 minutes away from the colliery. This castle is looked after by Historic Scotland. The castle was begun in the late 1300s and was a lordly residence for around 200 years. There is a unique facade in the courtyard of diamond-faceted stonework carried out in the 1580s by Francis Stewart, 5th Earl of Bothwell. The castle is a ruin but many of the walls are complete.

We enjoyed our visit to the castle and then Liz had a kayaking simulator experience at the Ratho Climbing Centre in Ratho to have her kayak paddling skills assessed. We stayed there in Harrie over night.

Saturday 30th August 2014

Early start as we wanted to spend the day in Edinburgh.  We parked Harrie in the Park & Ride at Ingliston near Edinburgh airport and caught a tram from the park into the centre of Edinburgh.

Our first visit of the day in Edinburgh was to St Mary’s Cathedral in Palmerston Place where the Scottish Diaspora Tapestries were being exhibited. There were two long lines of tapestries being exhibited down both sides of the cathedral.

After this visit we walked to The Georgian House in Charlotte Square (1796) which is a National Trust for Scotland property to show high society living in the Georgian period.

We then went on a long walk through the park in the centre of Edinburgh heading to the Royal Mile.

At the end of the park we visited a modern art exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery and the many famous paintings in the static galleries such as Titian and many other famous painters works.

After a short late lunch stop we then walked up the Mound to Lawnmarket on the Royal Mile where we went to another National Trust for Scotland property called Gladstone’s Land dating back to 1617. This was a merchant’s house with his shop below and it was well worth the visit. As photography is not allowed in either The Georgian House or in Gladstone’s Land, we can only show you the outsides of these properties.

Next we went to St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile to look at the building. St Giles was founded in 1120 and expanding in 1385 to the much larger gothic structure one sees today.

We were about to walk back to Prince’s Street to catch a tram back to the Park & Ride when we passed some street entertainers in the Royal Mile.  The first we stopped to watch was a magician who performed some remarkable tricks and was well applauded for it by the large crowd.  The next we stopped to watch was an escape artist and we watched him bound up in a straight jacket and chains only for him to escape before our eyes! These were both very good.  There were others but time had run out as we wanted to get home.

The tram back was regular every 10 minutes, quick and quiet running. It may have cost the council a lot of money but it is an efficent form of transport and at only £1.50 each way or £3.50 for the day and was well used.

Our drive home was also quick bearing in mind we were driving a motorhome as we were home in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

This was a packed short break, in pretty good weather – a lot done in a short time – very enjoyable!

This journey covered 1 day, 124 km / 78 miles.

Our route was Carrick Castle to Balloch and back to Carrick Castle.

The purpose of the journey was to have Harrie MOTed. We had not used her for a year as we had been concentrating on selling our yacht Dream Weaver (www.yacht-dream-weaver.co.uk) that we did in May 2014. After selling her the new owners asked us to skipper the yacht up to Glasgow in the Commonwealth Flotilla up the river Clyde on 26th July 2014 and so we stayed on the yacht for our last voyage during the period 25th to 27th July 2014.

Journey No 25 – 31st May to 3rd June 2013

This journey covered 4 days,  391 km/ 244 miles.

Our route was Carrick Castle to Clydebank, Glasgow, then Falkirk,  Inverkeithing, North Queensferry, Dunfermline and back to Carrick Castle.

The purpose of the journey was to provide support for Liz who was kayaking for charity from Loch Goil, Argyll to Dalgety Bay, Fife for Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre, Lochgoilhead (www.outdooreducation.co.uk)  to raise funds for the centre. Liz’s contribution was kayaking from Loch Goil to Bowling (the start of the Forth & Clyde Canal) with a stop over at Cove for the night of 30th May. Then to kayak from the exit of the canal near Falkirk on the River Carron to Dalgety Bay in Fife. Whilst others kayaked the canal Liz and Douglas finished painting their yacht Dream Weaver (www.yacht-dream-weaver.co.uk) in Rothesay Dock East, Clydebank and then met up again at the end of the canal.
